Those who travel by car to Istra (Porec, Pula, Rovinj...) can avoid to pay the Slovenian motorway toll following an alternate itinerary. After entering Slovenia through Rabuiese (the Trieste border-crossing on the way to Capodistria/Koper or Pola/Pula), turn right into the OMV service station and right again towards Hrvatini and Skofje. After passing through Skofje, at the roundabout follow the sign-posting to Dekani. After 1 kilometre, at the second roundabout, follow the sign-posting to Bertoki (not Dekani any more). In the village of Bertocchi/Bertoki turn left towards Sv.Anton and, after 200 metres, turn right towards Koper driving on for some 3 kilometres. Enter Koper/Capodistria (passing by the city signpost) and after 500 metres, at the crossroads with the main street, turn left following the Pola/Pula signposts, passing through the 300-metre-far traffic light and driving for some 10 kilometres up to the Croatian border.
In case of trouble in finding the right way, try and follow either Italian cars with the Trieste registration (TS) or Croatian cars with the Pula registration (PU), since it is likely that they are travelling on the same itinerary. Travellers to any other area of Croatia/Dalmatia do not need to pay any Slovenian motorway toll, since the usual route (Basovizza – Pese border-crossing - Kozina - Podgrad - Pesek border-crossing – Rupa) does not follow any tollroad in the Slovenian territory.Austria
