EU-FUNDED PROJECTS

Trieste Airport is actively involved in a number of EU-funded projects and studies for the development of transport and mobility within the EU.

Trieste Airport currently takes part to the following projects:

The project called CHAMPIONS – Improvement of CE regions’ accessibility through air transport interconnectivity is finalised to strengthen ties among Central European Countries through the integration of different transport systems and modes, particularly improving airport accessibility. The project aims at developing innovative and both economically and environmentally sustainable public transport systems able to be well integrated with air transport, implementing a user-friendly and hussle-free interchange between surface modes and air services. This is also the aim of the new interchange facility – called “Polo Intermodale” – that will be built at Trieste Airport.

Other project partners are APT Gorizia (a public transport operator currently linking Trieste Airport with the main centres of the region) in Italy, and other subjects – airports, universities and public authorities – in Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Germany and Ukraine.

The project called ADRIA A – Accessibility and development for the re-launch of the inner Adriatic area, funded under the Cross-border co-operation programme Italy – Slovenia 2007-2013, aims at re-organising cross-border mobility between Italy and Slovenia, as well as improving accessibility, for the creation of a single metropolitan area, easily and sustainably accessible. In this context, the engineering of new and improved cross-border public transport services will help the development and support the success of the future Trieste Airport interchange facility called “Polo Intermodale”.

The other project partners co-ordinated by CEI – Central European Initiative of Trieste – are both public (i.e. ministries, regions, provinces, local authorities, universities, etc.) and private subjects, including, among others, Informest, Venice Airport (SAVE), Ljubljana Airport, the universities of Trieste, Ljubljana, Venice (VIU) and Ferrara, as well as the port authorities of Trieste and Koper.

The project called AIR.NET – Regional Airports Network for a common economic space for the mobility of people and goods aims at establishing a permanent network among Adriatic regional airports through the development of new direct air services on unspoilt routes, as a part of a wider cross border co-operation programme called IPA Adriatic CBC Programme. The mission of this programme module is the enhancement of European integration and economic development through the improvement of mobility and accessibility focusing on airports.

The other project partners are Aeroporti di Puglia, the Municipality of L’Aquila, the Molise Region and the airports of Nis (Serbia) and Mostar (Bosnia and Erzegovina).
